Methods have changed since most parents were at school. Overriding the school's method - even with a correct one - can confuse a child mid-way through building understanding.

By the time a low test score comes home, a struggle has often been building quietly for weeks or months. Test scores are a lagging indicator - the real signs show up earlier, in behaviour:
Any one of these on its own might be nothing. Several together, especially if they're new, are worth taking seriously - and worth acting on before the next test confirms what the behaviour has already been telling you.
Maths is unusually cumulative. In most subjects, a weak topic stays roughly self-contained - a shaky grasp of the Tudors doesn't stop a child understanding the Victorians a term later. Maths doesn't work that way. Every new topic leans on the ones before it.
A child who never fully secured fractions in Year 5 will find percentages harder in Year 7, ratio harder in Year 8, and algebraic fractions close to impossible at GCSE - not because they're incapable, but because each new idea is built directly on top of the last one. Miss a foundation, and everything stacked on it wobbles.
This is exactly why early, small gaps are worth closing quickly. A ten-minute wobble on fractions today is far cheaper to fix than the algebra confusion it causes two years later.

"You tried three ways before it clicked" builds resilience. "You're so clever" quietly raises the stakes every time a question feels hard.
Splitting a bill, doubling a recipe, working out a bus timetable or comparing prices in a shop - all genuine maths, with none of the homework pressure attached.
Explaining a method to someone else is one of the strongest ways to check - and cement - real understanding, not just memorised steps.
A child who says "that was hard but I got there" is in a good place, even with a mediocre mark. Watch the self-talk as closely as the grade.
A short wobble on one topic, caught early, is usually something you can help with at home using the approaches above. It's worth considering extra support when:
The first thing a good tutor does is find the actual gaps - not just re-teach the current topic, but work out where understanding first slipped, sometimes a year or two back, and rebuild from there. That's the difference between a sticking-plaster session and one that fixes the underlying problem.
Before looking outside the home, it's worth a short conversation with your child's class or maths teacher. Ask what they're seeing in lessons, whether there's a specific topic gap, and whether any in-school support (intervention groups, extra resources) is already available. This achieves two things: it often surfaces useful, specific information you wouldn't otherwise have, and it means any home help or tutoring you arrange afterwards is working with the school's teaching, not against it.

Watch for avoidance (finding any excuse not to start homework), a jump from confident to anxious around maths specifically, and comments like "I'm just not a maths person." If test scores are dropping too, that confirms it - but don't wait for the test score. The behaviour usually shows up first.
It's best to avoid this if you can. Schools teach specific methods in a specific order for a reason, and a different method from home - even a correct one - can confuse a child who's still building their understanding. If you want to help with a method, ask your child to show you how their teacher taught it first, then work through it together their way.
Little and often beats occasional long sessions. Ten to fifteen minutes, a few times a week, keeps skills fresh without turning maths into a dreaded evening battle. Consistency matters far more than volume.
Home support is often enough for a wobble on one topic. It's worth considering a tutor when gaps span several topics, when homework has become a daily battle, when you're not confident with the current curriculum, or when your child needs to hear it explained by someone other than you. A good tutor's first job is finding exactly where the gaps are, then building from there.
